The federal government of Malaysia is preparing to completely ban the sale of electronic cigarette products. Firstly, it will impose a phased ban on open-type electronic cigarette devices, and then extend to all types of electronic cigarette-related products.
Health Minister Zulkifli Ahmad of Malaysia stated that Malaysia is moving towards the goal of completely prohibiting the sale and use of electronic cigarettes in order to curb the abuse of electronic cigarettes.
Although the specific timetable for the full implementation of the ban is still uncertain, Zulkifli said that as a preliminary measure, the Ministry of Health of Malaysia has held detailed discussions with other government agencies. In his written reply to the upper house, he stated: "These discussions involved the Ministry of Finance, the Malaysian Customs Department, the Ministry of Domestic Trade, the Ministry of Home Affairs (Malaysian Royal Police), the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, and the Legal Advising Office."
"The outcomes of these deliberations and the proposed implementation plan will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval, which will serve as the legal basis for Malaysia's complete ban on e-cigarettes."
